R. King Nelson – President and CEO
King Nelson has more than 30 years of diverse experience and expertise with medical devices. Previously, he served as president and CEO of Kerberos Proximal Solutions, which was acquired by FoxHollow, and as president and CEO of VenPro, which was acquired by Medtronic. Prior to that, he spent 19 years with Baxter and American Hospital Supply Corporation with roles that included division president for Dade Diagnostics, Bentley Labs and Baxter’s Perfusion Services. He currently serves on the board of directors for several early stage private medical device companies as well as for Digirad Corporation (NASDAQ: DRAD). King received his Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University and MBA from the University of Miami.
Steven Kesten, MD – Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Kesten brings over 20 years’ experience in pulmonary medicine including academic research and clinical leadership in the pulmonary industry. Previously, he served at Boehringer Ingelheim as the vice president, medicine for marketed products for respiratory disease. Prior to that, he served as the medical director of the Rush Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Program at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center; as the medical director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program at the University of Toronto; and as a staff pulmonologist at Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital. He also served as a faculty member of the University of Toronto and an associate professor of medicine at Rush Medical College. Dr. Kesten received his medical degree and specialty training in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine at the University of Toronto.
Lloyd Mencinger – General Manager, Europe
Lloyd’s depth of experience comes from nearly three decades of broad functional expertise across the health care spectrum with organizations such as Tenet Healthcare, Boston Scientific, Baxter International, Edwards Lifesciences and American Hospital Supply. During his tenure with Boston Scientific, Lloyd focused on supporting European and global business units, serving in such leadership positions as vice president of endoscopy/endosurgery, new business and strategy and vice president of sales, marketing, clinical economics and government affairs. Based in Europe for more than eight years, he has unique insight gained by developing best practice marketing, distribution and reimbursement strategies for the introduction and rapid adoption of new technologies. Lloyd has a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from California State University, Long Beach and an MBA from the University of Southern California.
Robert L. Barry – Founder and Chief Technology Officer
Bob founded Uptake Medical and serves as the company’s chief technology officer. Prior to Uptake Medical, he co-founded medical device company CoAptus and also served as director of product development at Spiration, a medical device company with a focus on emphysema and COPD disease. He’s previously held product development positions at Boston Scientific, Pfizer, NAMIC and Universal Medical Instruments. With more than 20 years of experience, Bob has a rich patent portfolio of over 25 U.S. Patents. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology from Rochester Institute of Technology.
Carol Holt – Vice President, Commercial Customer Operations
Carol brings a unique perspective to Uptake Medical which draws upon more than 25 years as a clinician and accomplished business professional. Prior to starting her own consultancy, Carol was Vice President of Customer Operations for Edwards Lifesciences, where she launched the industry’s first web-based ordering platform, managed global customer loyalty research, and pioneered the company’s first inside sales operation. Carol led global product development, marketing, and clinical education for the Critical-Care division of Baxter’s CardioVascular Group. Carol started her career as a critical care nurse and has extensive experience in the design and implementation of programs designed to maximize quality of care and patient outcomes. Carol has a Master’s degree in Critical Care Nursing from Texas Women’s University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Auburn University.
Norma Lowe, PhD – Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance
Norma has over 31 years of clinical and regulatory experience in the medical device industry. Previously, she had a successful long-term consulting practice with experience in the cardiovascular, oncology, renal and respiratory areas in startup and mid-size companies. In addition to consulting experience, Norma has significant corporate experience with Baxter Healthcare (Edwards), Medtronic (Cardiopulmonary) and Alpha Therapeutics. Norma holds six U.S. patents. She has a Bachelor’s of Science and a Master’s of Science from Brigham Young University and a Doctorate of sciences from Washington State University.
Krista Mann – Vice President, Finance and Acting Chief Financial Officer
With over 25 years of early stage and private company experience, Krista has served in a number of companies with focus on finance, accounting, business planning and strategic solutions. She was chief financial officer of Adolfson Associates, an environmental consulting firm. She has served in other leadership capacities including controller of the Seattle Sonics NBA team, Coopers and Lybrand and Bank of America. She is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) and graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor’s degree in finance.
Mike Numamoto – Vice President, Marketing
Mike brings over 20 years of medical device marketing experience in both startup and corporate settings. Mike was previously vice president of marketing for Edwards Lifesciences heart valve therapy business unit; director of marketing for VenPro Corporation; director of sales & marketing for American Red Cross Tissue Services; and director of marketing for Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Mike received his Bachelor of Science in biological sciences from University of California, Irvine and his MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Greg Watson – Vice President, Manufacturing Operations and Product Development
Greg has over 25 years experience in the medical device industry in both startup and corporate settings. Greg was previously vice president of manufacturing and product development for TherOx Corporation; director of operations and director of research and development in the Cardiovascular Division of Baxter International; and in a variety of manufacturing management positions at Becton Dickinson. He currently has nine U.S. patents and serves on an advisory board of a private manufacturing corporation. Greg received his Bachelor of Science from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
